Capacity Building in Surgical Care: Focus on Education & Certification
Building a great perioperative workplace requires optimizing the art of developing, protecting and cultivating capacities. The aim of capacity building is to improve practices and infrastructure by creating new approaches, structures or values which sustain and enhance the abilities of practitioners and their organizations. At the individual level, capacity building refers to changing attitudes and behaviors. At the institutional level it focuses on the overall organizational performance and functioning capabilities, as well as the ability of an organization to adapt to change.
A successful capacity building program for healthcare professionals focuses on training, education and certification must be effective, efficient and sustainable. Adopting processes that have already been implemented around the world to strengthen surgical systems is essential. Effective educational programs for perioperative nurses with differentiated designs that reflect perioperative competencies and educational needs per clinical ladder are necessary since there is a continuous need for trained, specialized, and certified perioperative nurses.
